Welcome to our bilingual literacy classroom, where language is celebrated as both a bridge and a foundation for learning. This class serves students in kindergarten through second grade who are developing reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in two languages simultaneously. Our goal is to build confident, capable communicators who can think and express themselves fluently across linguistic contexts.

Throughout the year, students will build stamina as readers and writers, develop a love for stories in multiple languages, and grow in their ability to navigate the world with empathy and curiosity. Assessments are ongoing and responsive, ensuring that every child receives the support and challenge they need to thrive.

  • No, but you can expect your language proficiency to grow no matter what your starting point is! Acuarela lessons are written in the language of instruction and guide teachers through key crosslinguistic connections to strengthen teaching and learning for MLLs in their language of instruction.

  • Our #BuiltBilingüe materials can be used in any language allocation model, from 90:10 to 50:50. Foundational Biliteracy is only a small part of the instructional day, so Acuarela is designed to ensure that your program fosters biliteracy from the beginning, within the language allocation model that works best for your context and kids. There is no longer any need to duplicate foundational skills instruction, cross fingers and hope the transfer will happen on its own (particularly given the orthographic complexity of the English code), or ask teachers to remap curricula or develop a biliteracy scope and sequence themselves!

  • Our Foundational Biliteracy materials provide clear crosslinguistic connection opportunities in every single lesson. On ‘A Days’, students may be asked to compare and contrast letter sounds during initial instruction and to consider language variation across the English- and Spanish-speaking worlds, building appreciation for the diversity of each. While reading decodable texts on ‘B Days’, students are invited to participate in an interactive discussion around a Language Spark, growing their understanding of the subtleties of each language in active practice.

  • On ‘C Days’, students dive into language standards in each language, leveraging skills that transfer across languages and targeting explicit instruction on those that differ. With Acuarela, every lesson is a language lesson.
